I was awakened by those cute little noises that Destiny makes when she wants to eat. I drowsily sat up, turned on the flashlight, and reached for Destiny. That is when I first heard a noise directly over my head. There was a distinct rustling sound, followed by the sound of that same something on the banana leaf that over hangs my bedroom. Oh my, I though. Probably another snake. I don’t know why they can’t stay out of my bedroom. But, before I could ponder snakes for long, I heard another sound. It went crunch, crunch, crunch, through the jungle, starting at the base of that banana tree, and then through the jungle behind my room. SNAKES DON”T WALK! But, since it is 3 a.m., I don’t think that I should just run and wake someone up, do you? So, I bravely shoved the bottle into Destiny’s mouth and listened intently.
Sure enough, the crunch, crunch, crunch continued until I heard splash, splash. Now, that is NOT my imagination. Snakes cannot walk through the water either! It was then that I remembered the spotlight that Jason had made to spot thieves, so forgetting that it was the middle of the night I made a mad dash to Jason’s room and told him to get his spotlight and come quick! There is something about being woke up at 3 a.m. that puts extra enthusiasm into obedience. He jumped up and came at a run. We shone the light out my wall and saw…nothing. But hey, the jungle is thick and so I was not all that surprised. By that time, Roy woke up and joined us at the half wall, peering into the darkness and listening intently. Then they heard it too. Splash, crunch, crunch… They are much braver than I am, so they grabbed their flashlights and headed out into the dark night.
I could hear their progress around to the area where we had last heard the crunching. Then, I heard a grunting noise. Oh my! What could this be?? They came back to the house reporting that they thought that whatever it was was sitting in a clump of bamboo, but they could not see anything. Back to the wall we went, listening once again. Then, we heard moaning sounds! Very distinct moaning sounds! Not like a cow, and not like anything else we had ever heard before! We also heard the neighbors dogs going crazy across the creek. Out they ran again to see what in the world this strange creature was.
Now, I would like to report just exactly what they found. But, they still could not see anything.( the elephant grass is over 10 feet tall, and it is hard to see anything when wandering through that stuff)  The next morning we looked for tracks, and found….NOTHING! I don’t believe that it was nothing, and neither do Roy or Jason. But, Travis has teased us a lot about mythical, shadowy, white, vapourous creatures, figments of our imagination! He can laugh all he wants, but we are all terribly curious as to what it was, and whether it was one creature or more than one. Like, maybe a snake slithered off the roof, and then some other animal started making noise? I don’t know. But, I am so thankful that we know the TRUTH and we don’t have to be frightened of strange occurances in the middle of the night.
