Little Incidents

Last Sabbath Jason was coming home on the motorbike when he was waved to the side of the road by three young people on foot. They boldly asked for some money to buy alcohol with, not thinking that he would understand them since they spoke Karen! For the first time in his life, Jason was able to give a temperance lecture to three astonished youth.

Jason and I have been trying to remember the words to “The Banquet Song” so we have been singing what we remember quite frequently, but perhaps not frequently enough. The other morning I was listening to Hannah trying to sing that song, but she got the words just a little mixed up…she was singing, “I cannot come, I cannot come to the banquet, don’t trouble me now, I have bought me a wife, I have married a cow”…

The other morning, we were all sound asleep when suddenly, a huge vine came crashing down on our leaf roof, giving us all the impression that a bomb had just exploded and our lives were in imminent danger. Lesson number one about jungle living…make sure that there are no dead vines in the trees right over your house.

Ever since Jason thought that he saw a crocodile in the creek, we have been hunting for any information we can find about these critters from the locals. We were told that it could have been a monitor lizard, but Jason was not convinced. So, he kept asking questions. The latest is that yes, there have been crocodiles in our river, although people eat them so they have not been seen for a while, but that there still are crocodiles in the river just across the border. So, does anybody know what the range for a croc is? I have been trying to find out and have not found the information I am looking for. Our questions and Jason’s sighting has created quite a stir with the locals…they would just love to have a crocodile dinner.

Living where we do now is totally different than anywhere else we have lived over here so far. When the villagers come to visit, they often bring things for us to plant. One of my prize possessions was a whole bag of medicinal turmeric starts! We use that for sores over here and it works great. They have also shown us which weeds to cook and eat, where to find the best mushrooms, and where to plant our gardens for the best results. I love it and always look forward to learning more. There is nothing like munching on a yummy leaf straight from your jungle pantry.

At worship every morning and evening, Roy always asks the girls what the story is about to see if they understand it. This past week, Destiny got the routine figured out, and now when Daddy asks the questions, she always answers earnestly, “About Jesus!” That pretty much sums it up all right. All the stories we tell our children, the lives that we live, the place where we minister, everything is all about Jesus and what he has done for us. We praise God for letting us be a tiny part of his big plan.

  1. As far as I know crocs are very territorial. Chances are that if it was a croc you will see it again!
My guess is that it was a monitor lizard.
Glad you guys are having such an amazing time. Missionary life is full of surprises . . . God bless!

  2. I looked at their pictures today on google, and so now I can describe them to Jason…see what he thinks. He said it was in a remote canyon, very hard to get to. One of these days he will have to go back and get pictures. Then we will have conclusive evidence of what it is.

  3. Wow! Tell Jason to not let them eat it until I get back there to see it! 😀 Hope you all are doing great up there!
