Friday Night

When I was a little girl, Friday nights were super special. We did a lot of fun things, like always having the same special meal, lighting candles, and being together as a family. Mom would play the piano, and Jeff and I would sing with her. Dad listened appreciatively, while going over his sermon material for the next day’s sermon. I always get warm fuzzys when I think about those special times. It was all so close and comfortable.

Well, the only reason I started thinking about all this was that tonight strongly resembled those good times. Travis pulled out his violin, and so I naturally sat down at the piano to accompany him. We had just gotten going pretty well, when Roy grabbed the viola to join us. Now, Roy does not play the viola, so all the kids started paying pretty close attention to the proceedings. I quickly whipped out a hymn with an easy alto line, and Travis showed him how to play one solitary note, and we were in business! It was not quite breathtaking, but it did qualify as music…maybe! Pawkuhmooeydee then got in on the action and started singing with us. It was wonderful!

When we wore out, I looked around to see what the other kids were doing, and I found ALL the older kids lying on the floor in the living room behind us, coloring! My dear friend sent me some wonderful coloring books, and I had copied them and set them on a shelf. I knew that the little girls would love them, but I did not expect the older boys to like them too! But, there they were, all lying there companionably, coloring. One of the boys was humming a hymn, as he carefully colored a picture about creation.  It was such a peaceful and happy scene that I just had to tell you all about it.  Somehow, I never expected to get this ragtag mix of kids to act like a peaceful family, but they did. With God ALL things are possible.

  1. Beautiful, and even more beautiful, knowing the setting. Thanks to God for giving you those minutes of Sabbath peace, and the coloring sheets. The angels must have been thrilled, and singing too.
