Bathing 101

To prepare for your bath properly, get a lightweight sarong. Stand in front of a curious crowd. (especially when performing this feat for the first time) Slip the sarong over your head, over your clothes and tuck it as securely as you can under your arm pits. Next, take all your other clothes off while keeping the sarong in place. Re-tuck your sarong before climbing down the ladder to head to the creek. Smile calmly at the growing crowd. Step into the refreshing (OK, cold!) water, trying to avoid the deep mud. While facing the onlookers, recheck sarong to assure that it won’t fall off when it gets wet. Take a bowl and pour icy water all over your shivering form. Apply soap, while maintaining your dignity, if you can. Use sarong to scrub covered parts while giving the throngs a friendly wave to keep them entertained. Next you will rinse, while trying not to disturb the mud at the bottom of the shallow creek, and then wade out of the water, avoiding the mud again. On the creek bank, sitting in the dirt where you left it, you will find another dry sarong which you will put on over the wet one, and then you will pull the wet one off, making sure that the dry one stays in place. Now you can make your way up the dirt path to the hut. Be sure to make certain that your sarong is tucked in snugly before ascending the shaky ladder. Now, you start to put on your clothing over the sarong, leaving the sarong in place while each layer is added. At this point, the crowd will either be smiling or scowling, depending on your technique. When all the new layers are secured, slip the sarong out from beneath your clothing and bow to the happy natives. And remember, you must do this every single day if you are to going to win hearts and influence people.

*sorry, I didn’t get any pictures for you this time!
