A Sweet Spirit

This morning as I was finishing up my worship time, my attention was drawn to what was happening in the living room. Roy is teaching a bible class to our students. They are very interested in history and prophecy, so Roy is simplifying The Great Controversy for them. They had never heard of the reformation, or the dark ages, or any kind of church history! It is hard for me to even imagine not knowing about stuff like that, but they have never heard it before. So, Roy has a very attentive audience. It is fun to watch them learn. They have notepads, and pens ready for any new word or bible text that they can write down to learn.

After a really bad week last week, I feel like we are making a little bit of progress with Meme. We went and talked with her teachers, and found out that she had been telling them that the reason she could not do her homework was because we watch television all the time! That was a stunning surprise to us! (Especially since we don’t own a television, here or in America!) So, after explaining to her teacher that there are some excuses going on here, and that we want to know how she is doing in school, and  that we will deal with her if she does not do well, we got the idea through to Meme that we mean business! The “strange” thing is that Meme does respond well to discipline. She seems to need those boundaries in her life just as much as Hannah does. We have found that Hannah and Meme were desperate for a schedule and consistency in their lives. If I try to change anything, life does not go well!

Yesterday, I went out to the well to do laundry. During the hot season, I was always trying to take other peoples laundry so that I would have more to do. But now, I have  Hannah, Meme and my clothing to wash, and sometimes Roy’s,  and it is not hot and toasty, so doing laundry is not nearly as much fun. So, I was scrubbing away out there praying for a way to reach Meme when Meme and Pawkuhmooeydee came out to join me. They helped me rinse all those clothes and hang them up. Then Meme got the bright idea of washing my hair for me. She must have washed it about 10 times, especially enjoying the part where she got to dump the cold water over my head to rinse the soap out. She laughed and giggled and had a wonderful time, while I shivered and shook and did my share of giggling!  I didn’t really think that my hair was all that dirty, but I realize that maybe she could see some dirt that I was not aware of!  I realized later that God had really answered my prayer.

Although we don’t have all the answers for our school, or our two girls, we are relying more and more on Jesus for help, and we are noticing the sweet spirit that He brings into our lives and home when we follow Him more closely. The storm may be raging around us, but we are safe in Jesus hands.
